I don't know ~ she is still in Tokyo or ~ she's gone to Osaka. 彼女はまだ東京にいるか, それとも大阪へ行ってしまったか私にはわからない

He asked me ~ I liked the plan (or not). その計画が気に入っているかどうかを彼は私にきいた(=He said to me, “Do you like the plan (or not)?”)

It is still uncertain ~ she's coming or not. 彼女が来るか来ないかまだはっきりしていない

It depends (on) ~ we have enough money. それは私たちに十分なお金があるかどうかによって決るものです

He's doubtful (about) ~ he can afford a car. 彼は自分に車を持てる余裕があるかどうかわからない

◇[語法][whetherとif] (1) 次の場合, 両者は交換可能: a)他動詞の目的語となるとき《◆ただし, 目的語になる名詞節が文頭にくるときはwhetherのみ》 b)whether … or notの場合( ⇒ 1 ).
(2) 次の場合はifとの交換は不可: a)前置詞の目的語となるとき: the question of whether I should go or not 私が行くべきかどうかという問題. b)whether to do: I don't know whether to go or stay. 行くべきかとどまるべきかわからない. c)主語または補語になるとき: Whether she comes or not does not concern me. 彼女が来るかどうかは私にはどうでもよいことだ《◆後置された場合もwhetherの方が通例好まれるが, きわめてくだけた言い方ではifも時に用いられる: It does not concern me whether [if] she comes or not. また, この例で助動詞を用いる場合, 簡略化して… if she can(not) come. とすることもある》. d)同格節. e)whether or not( ⇒ 成句 ).

2 [直後にto不定詞を従えて] (…すべき)かどうか《◆ifでの代用はできない》

You needn't decide ~ to go or stay. あなたは行くべきかとどまるべきかを決断する必要はありません

We must reach a decision (as to) ~ to sell this car. 私たちはこの車を売るべきかどうかの結論を出さねばならない

W~ to give this plan my approval is a question I have been worrying about. この計画に同意すべきかどうかは私が気にしてきた問題です.

W~ we win or (~ we) lose, we'll celebrate. 勝っても負けても私たちはお祝いをします

He sat next to her ~ by accident or design. 彼は偶然か故意か(知らないが)彼女の隣りに座った.

(1) [接続詞的に] (…する)かどうか

It makes no difference to me ~ or not she knows Bill. 彼女がビルを知っているかどうかは私にはどうでもよいことである

I wonder ~ or not to leave a note for her. 彼女に置き手紙をすべきかどうかしらと思う.

(2) (…しよう)とそうでなかろうと

W~ or not you realize it, I am a grown man now. あなたがお気づきかどうか知らないが, 私はもう大人です.

◇[語法] 特にwhether節が長い場合にor notをwhetherの直後に置く傾向がある.
(3) [副詞的に] いずれにしても, どんなことがあっても

I will be back soon, ~ or not. いずれにしてもすぐもどってきます.
